More from the Campaign Trail
In our last issue, we uncovered the attitude and intentions of Mom voters. We know that Moms are planning to come out to the polls and we know the hot-button issues in the Presidential race. But, debate topics aside, what do Moms really think about what they're seeing on the campaign trail. BSM Media delved deeper to find out:
Moms on Voting:
90.2% of respondents plan to vote for President in 2008. Of those who aren't penciling November 4th into their planners, 5.5% are unsure of whether or not they are voting and 4.3% do not plan to cast their vote. Many are still undecided (46.1%) about their candidate of choice, while 53.9% have made a decision
On the Candidates:
Of those Moms who have chosen a candidate to support, 29.9% are voting for Hillary Clinton with Barack Obama as a close second (18.3%). The candidate which the smallest percentage of respondents' support is John McCain with 6.6%.
On Gender:
As far as voting for a female presidential candidate to advance the rights of women overall, 44.2% said they would not, 28% said they would, and 27.8% were unsure
On Hillary Clinton:
When asked about Hillary Clinton's recent show of emotion prior to the New Hampshire primary, 42.7% said it made her seem more human and likable, while 36.5% thought it was a calculated move to gain votes and sympathy. The Moms were split down the middle when it comes to Clinton, with 34% responding that they don't like her political views or personality and 28.5% saying that they like her and plan on voting for her. The remainder of the respondents respect her but disagree with her political views.
When asked if they relate to Clinton in her role as a mother or woman, the most popular response (45.9%) was that they don't see themselves in her at all. However, seeing Chelsea on the campaign trail won't make her more relatable in the eyes of mothers, as 64.7% said it has nothing to do with politics. When asked to compare Clinton to a fictional TV mom/spouse 53% chose Murphy Brown, because she is independent and career-focused.
On Spouses:
63.7% responded that it's important to see the wife or spouse of a candidate on the campaign trail. Even more telling, 45.5% said the candidate's spouse plays a significant role in their vote. When asked which candidate's spouse they most relate to 27.9% said Bill Clinton, 14.6% chose Michelle Obama and 5.7% relate to Janet Huckabee.
Most Moms seem to have a favorable impression of our current first lady, Laura Bush. 35.8% like the way she carries herself in the public eye, 12% like her because of the support she provides her husband and 11.3% like her because of her charitable contributions. According to the Moms surveyed, the most influential first ladies in history are Jacqueline Kennedy (33%) and Eleanor Roosevelt (31%).
